Chronologisch angeordnet, stellt das Buch über 2.500 wegweisende grafische Arbeiten aus aller Welt vor, von denen 71 im Detail vorgestellt werden, ebenso wie 61 der innovativen Köpfe dahinter – unter ihnen Alfons Mucha (Jugendstil-Plakate), Edward Johnston (Erscheinungsbild der Londoner U-Bahn), El Lissitzky (konstruktivistische Grafiken), Herbert Matter (Plakate mit colorierten Fotomontagen), Saul Bass (animierte Filmvorspanne) und A. M. Cassandre (Art déco Plakate). Visuelle Zeitachsen fassen zu Beginn jeder Dekade Entwicklungen in Grafik und Gesellschaft zusammen. In den Kapiteln kuratiert Jens Müller dann neben gestalterischen Meilensteinen der einzelnen Jahre Themen wie „Plakate aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg“ oder „Humor in der Grafik“. Während David Jury in einem einleitenden Essay die Wurzeln der Profession untersucht und auf die Entwicklung des Druckwesens blickt. Ein Nachschlagewerk zur Genese und Gegenwart des Kommunikationsdesigns mit enzyklopädischem Anspruch. Ein anstehender zweiter Band setzt 1960 an und reicht bis in die Gegenwart.
